Using this checklist, identify safety hazards in your program space. It is important to view and move about your room during this activity. Kneel and look at the environment through the eyes of a child. Remember they look under, over and alongside. Think about their developmental stage as you examine each potential hazard.

Directions: Mark if a hazard is not present. For remaining hazards, correct and document the date when the hazard was corrected. Once you have completed the checklist, review with your coach, trainer, or administrator.

	Fire and Safety and Emergency Response
	Safety rules and evacuation routes are prominently displayed.
	Doorways, walkways and evacuation exits are kept clear.
	External exit doors can be opened from the inside without a key and emergency fire exits are marked with signs.
	Fire-control equipment is easily accessible, marked with signs, regularly tested, and of the appropriate type.
	Rooms
	The room is clean and tidy.
	There is sufficient space for each person to work safely.
	Floor surfaces are maintained in a safe condition and they are suitable for the type of activities being conducted.
	Walls and ceilings are safe and in good condition.
	Steps, stairs and ramps are in safe condition and secure with non-slip surfaces and secure handrails where needed.
	Doors, windows, locks and latches are in good condition and in working order.
	The lighting is adequate to work safely in.
	Electrical
	Electrical equipment is in good condition (no fraying). Electrical cords are secured safely.
	Computers are plugged into an approved, secured surge protector.

	Storage Hazards
	Flammable material is stored and handled in a safe manner.
	Required resources and equipment are stored safely.
	Free-standing shelves and cupboards are secured to ensure stability.
	Storage methods used eliminate or minimize accidents (heavy objects are stored between a child’s mid-thigh and shoulder height).
	Furniture, Fixtures, and Fittings
	All furniture is safe and in good condition.
	Table and chair legs are not broken.
	Nails and screws are not visible.
	Cushion filling is not visible.
	Light fittings and fixtures and ceiling fans are in good condition and working order.
	Hanging displays are secure to the wall and pose no hazard.
	Hazardous Substances
	Hazardous substances are stored and labeled appropriately.
	General
	Animal cages are clean and in good condition.
	Sink areas are clean and in good working order (i.e., no leaks).
