Reframed Rule: Be safe; Chew on (object); Mouths are for eating food. Original Rule: "No climbing up the slide." Slide down the slide; Be Safe (note: “Be safe” could allow for times when climbing up the slide is allowable, e.g., if no other children are using the slide, it is not very high, and there is an appropriate fall zone). Original Rule: "No pushing." Reframed Rule: Use gentle hands/touches. Original Rule: "No teasing." Reframed Rule: Use kind words; Be a good friend; Be respectful. Original Rule: "No whining." Reframed Rule: Use kind words. Original Rule: "Don't talk back." Reframed Rule: Listen; Use kind words; Be respectful (note: this original rule could be disrespectful towards children and focuses on obedience. With this rule providers should reconsider their ideas about relationships with children. This concept is discussed further in the VLS Positive Guidance and Cognitive Development courses). Original Rule: "No talking when others are talking." Reframed Rule: Be respectful; Be safe; Listen; Take Turns (note: this original rule is not a developmentally appropriate goal for young children; however, it is appropriate to emphasize the importance of respecting everyone’s communication and waiting until another person finishes speaking before you speak).
