Clayton is a 7-month-old infant in your classroom. Over the past week you have noticed that Clayton cries and seems anxious when his dad drops him off. Clayton’s dad lingers at first and then lets you know that he is going to sneak out before Clayton notices. Clayton’s mom has started calling several times during the day to see if Clayton is crying. How do you respond?
You might gather some information and tips about separation anxiety with infants. You can include some anecdotal notes about how long Clayton cries, what seems to soothe him, and what routines you have in place for helping Clayton work through being dropped off in your care. Ask Clayton’s parents about things they do at home to deal with separation anxiety. Talk about routines or rituals Clayton’s parents can create for both the drop-off and pick-up times. Make sure Clayton’s dad understands that sneaking out of the classroom does not help Clayton. Offer to call Clayton’s mom mid-day to let her know how these routines are working. |
