What are some safety issues that are happening during your outdoor play and learning time? What about these issues make it difficult to supervise? Brainstorm possible supervision strategies that may address these safety issues. Refer to additional resources for ideas. Discuss with other direct-care staff which methods to try. Implement a strategy and observe whether it is effective. Make changes if needed.
Use this tip card frequently to keep outdoor supervision focused and beneficial to a child’s growth and development.Caregivers have several roles to play during outdoor play and learning experiences: - Planner – Prepare environment and equipment. Plan supervision zones. Prepare any special activities or materials ahead of time.
- Equipment Manager – Remember sunscreen, attendance list, coats, tissues, and other necessary supplies.
- Safety Patrol – Continually move and scan, looking for safety and health hazards.
- Cheerleader – Encourage active engagement and participate in exploration.
- Host – Welcome children outdoors. Provoke conversations. Ask questions. Answer questions.
- Designer – Provide equipment, props and materials to extend and enhance outdoor opportunities.
